TAMMY SARGEANT AND SHEILA KING WIN MARCH 2013 GUESSTIMATE RACE

Tammy Sargeant and Sheila King tied for the March 11, 2013 guesstimate race title by missing their predicted time by 8 seconds. This was the first guestimate title for each runner. Rounding out the top five were Brian King 3- 13 second miss, Dave Parsel 4- 17 second miss and Nelson Slagle 5- 18 second miss.

JOHN ARAUJO WINS MARCH 2013 5K BUT FEMALES DOMINATE

John Araujo won his 46th lunch hour 5K in a time of 19:15. John ran his fastest time since an 18:59 in March 2011. Rounding out the top five were: Dave Parsel 2- 19:40, Randy Parker 3- 20:37, Sheila King 4- 20:52 and Mary Nickles 5- 21:19. The top three runners were the top 3 runners last month. The top 10 runners today were all over 50 years old!!

We had the fastest group of females in the history of the 331 lunch hour 5Ks dating back to April 1981. Some examples of their speed:

1-   For the first time ever two females were in the top 5 runners and 3 of the top 6 runners were females. The three female sprinters were:

Sheila King 20:52, Mary Nickles 21:19 and Tammy Sargeant 21:52. All three females are over 50! And last month a 4th female over 50 ran a 21:24 time!

2-   This is the first time we had three females under 22 minutes in the same race. In fact we have never had more than two different females breaking 22 minutes in any of the 32 years of the lunch hour 5Ks. In only 3 of those years did we have two runners breaking 22 minutes and in the other 29 years we had one or no female breaking 22 minutes!!

3-   We also had 5 females under 25:30 for the first month ever. Add Laura Sohaskey 24:24 and Kathy Kern 25:23 to the above three to complete our fast five. In only 7 of the last 20 years have we had more than 5 different runners all year with times under 25:30. In the other 13 years we had 4 or fewer females break 25:30.

4-   The most runners ever participating in a lunch hour 5K was 84 for our 200th 5K in Jan 2001. The fastest female in that race was Kathy Kern in a time of 24:01 in 35th place, the same Kathy that was 5th fastest female today.

5-   There were 30 runners today, 20 males and 10 females. The females had 3 of the top 6 finishers, 5 of the top 12, 7 of the top 22 and 9 of the top 27. The average time for a female was about the same as an average time for a male in todays race.

6-   Yes, the writer was out sprinted by all ten females and eight were at least 22 minutes faster and the 8th female was pushing a stroller!

7-   And two females won the guesstimate race and all three runners setting personal best were females.

CONGRATS TO ALL TEN FEMALES RUNNING TODAY.

Nicole Baker (41 seconds better), Tammy Sargeant (40 seconds faster) and Mary Nickles (33 seconds better) as all established personal bests. Mary lowered her personal best for the 5th time in her last five races.

Congrats to Mary Nickles who lowered the 50-59 age group female record for Boeing employees to 21:19. This is the 5th time she has lowered the record in her last five races. Shelia King, a spouse of a Boeing employee, ran a 20:52 today and that is 40 seconds off of her best time in our race.

The next 5K is scheduled for 11:50 AM Monday, April 8, 2013 at Gate 510 on the northwest corner of the Boeing Seal Beach Facility.
