MARISSA NICKLES BECOMES FIRST FEMALE TO WIN BOEING SEAL BEACH LUNCH HOUR 5K

Marissa Nickles ran a 20:01 5K on July 14, 2014 to win the 347th lunch hour 5K. Marissa became the first female to win the race. Rounding out the top 5 were: James Kalasky 2- 20:25, Brian Conboy 3- 20:45, Kathleen Phair 4- 21:05 and Giovany Pelaez 5- 22:27.

Marissa is a college student and is the daughter of Mary and Dan Nickles. Mary ran her 17th lunch hour 5K today and Dan has run 8. Marissa attends Cal Poly Pamona and is on the track team usually running the 1500. Her personal best for the 1500 is 4:42. Her fastest 5K is 18:11. She was a little injured today with either tendinitis or a hamstring injury. She graduated from Fountain Valley High School where she had a personal best of 18:30 for 3 miles and 5:10 for the mile.

Maarissa ran the 4th fastest time by a female runner in all 347 lunch hour races. The female runners with a faster time are Bernice Cardajal who ran an 18:50 in January 2000 at age 20 and placed 15th, Nicole Blalock who ran a 19:04 in October 2007 at the age of 23 and placed 4th in the race, and Laura Weaver who ran a 19:27 in Jan 1999 at the age of 28 and placed 6th in the race.

For the 2nd time ever we had two female finishers in the top 5. In March 2013 Sheila King was 4th in 20:52 and Mary Nickles was 5th in 21:19. Today was the second time we had two in the top 5, but the first time we had 2 in the top 4. Marissa was 1st and Kathleen Phair was 4th in a time of 21:05. And it was the first time we had two females run 21:05 or faster in the same race.

Eight females ran today and five broke 29 minutes.

The two runners setting personal bests (PB) today were Rosemary Ludwinski who lowered her PB by 42 seconds and Giovany Pelaez who knocked 8 seconds off of his previous PB.

John Strand, 80, became the first male runner in the 347 5Ks over 80 years of age and ran a 33:49.
